Research Gist
Earlier animal research had suggested that Bacopa monnieri supports learning and memory, but human evidence was inconclusive. This double-blind, placebo-controlled study tested a standardized Brahmi extract in healthy adults. Participants were randomly assigned to take either 300 mg of the extract or a placebo, and cognitive testing was carried out at the start, at five weeks and at twelve weeks. Compared with placebo, the Brahmi group showed significant improvements in the speed of visual information processing, in learning rate and in memory consolidation — how well newly learned information is retained. State anxiety was also lower. The largest effects appeared at twelve weeks rather than five, supporting the idea that Brahmi works gradually with regular use rather than immediately.
Key Learnings
- Speed of visual information processing improved compared with placebo.
- Learning rate and memory consolidation both improved.
- State anxiety was lower in the Brahmi group.
- Effects were strongest at 12 weeks, pointing to gradual benefit with consistent daily use.
- This was a single, relatively small study in healthy adults — results should be read alongside the wider evidence.
