Research Gist
Individual trials can be too small to give a reliable picture on their own. This systematic review brought together randomized, placebo-controlled human trials of Bacopa monnieri to see which cognitive effects held up consistently. The reviewers looked across several areas of thinking, including memory, attention and processing speed. The clearest and most consistent finding was for memory free recall — the ability to remember information without prompts. Across the included trials, Brahmi improved performance in 9 of the 17 free-recall tests assessed. Evidence for other cognitive areas was less consistent. The authors concluded that Brahmi has the potential to improve memory, and called for further well-designed trials to clarify effects in other domains.
Key Learnings
- The review pooled randomized, placebo-controlled human trials of Brahmi.
- Memory free recall was the most consistently improved cognitive area.
- Brahmi improved performance in 9 of 17 free-recall tests across the included trials.
- Systematic reviews give a broader view than any single trial.
- Effects on attention and other cognitive areas were less consistent and need further research.
