Research Gist
This study examined Celastrus paniculatus seed extract and its effect on memory performance in rats, alongside the molecular changes accompanying it. Animals treated with the extract performed better on standard memory assessments. Tissue analysis identified increases in Arc and PSD-95, two proteins closely involved in synaptic plasticity — the process by which connections between neurons strengthen during learning. AMPA-receptor trafficking, which governs how signals move between neurons, was also enhanced. The work supports Jyotishmati's classical Ayurvedic role as a Medhya herb associated with alertness and memory.
Key Learnings
- Memory performance improved in rats treated with the seed extract.
- Arc and PSD-95, proteins tied to synaptic plasticity, were upregulated.
- AMPA-receptor trafficking, involved in signal transmission, was enhanced.
- The findings align with Jyotishmati's classical Medhya classification in Ayurveda.
- This was a rat study — memory effects in humans were not assessed.
