Research Gist
This study examined a gold-bhasma-class Ayurvedic formulation containing Celastrus, Tinospora and Rajat Bhasma in a nematode model of Parkinson's disease. The worms were exposed to 6-OHDA, a neurotoxin that selectively damages dopamine-producing cells. Treated worms showed reduced alpha-synuclein aggregation, the protein clumping characteristic of Parkinson's pathology. Genes involved in mitochondrial quality control and dopamine synthesis were also partially rescued. While the formulation tested is not Swarna Bhasma alone, it represents the closest published analogue to a nano-gold herbo-mineral preparation evaluated in a Parkinson's context.
Key Learnings
- A gold-bhasma-class formulation reduced alpha-synuclein aggregation in the model.
- Mitochondrial quality-control genes (pink-1 and pdr-1) were partially restored.
- Genes involved in dopamine synthesis showed improved expression.
- The study supports the rationale behind combining nano-gold preparations with botanicals in a single formulation.
- The formulation studied is not Swarna Bhasma alone, and the model is an invertebrate — findings are indicative rather than confirmatory.
