Research Gist
This study used a Drosophila model to examine the mechanisms behind Shankhpushpi's calming effects. Flies treated with Convolvulus pluricaulis showed reduced depression-like behaviour in standard assessment tasks. Molecular analysis identified two contributing pathways. Antioxidant markers including ascorbate and Sod1 were raised, indicating improved handling of oxidative stress. GABAergic signalling components including GABA-B and Rdl were also increased. GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the nervous system, associated with calming and relaxation.
Key Learnings
- Depression-like behaviour was reduced in treated flies.
- Antioxidant markers including ascorbate and Sod1 were raised.
- GABAergic signalling components (GABA-B, Rdl) showed increased activity.
- GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter, linked to calm and relaxation.
- Drosophila is a simple model organism — findings show mechanism, not human outcomes.
