Research Gist

This study characterised classically prepared Swarna Bhasma using modern analytical methods and assessed its biological activity. Physicochemical analysis confirmed that the traditional Shodhana and Marana process produces nanocrystalline gold particles. The preparation was found to be biocompatible and non-toxic in the models tested. Biological assessment showed antioxidant activity through free-radical clearance, along with anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. The study bridges classical Ayurvedic preparation methods with contemporary nanoscience, providing a materials-level basis for how Swarna Bhasma may act in the body.

Key Learnings

  • Classical preparation methods produce genuinely nanocrystalline gold particles.
  • The preparation was biocompatible and non-toxic in the models assessed.
  • Measurable antioxidant activity was demonstrated through free-radical clearance.
  • Anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activity was also observed.
  • This is a characterization and activity study, not a clinical trial — it explains the material, not patient outcomes.
