Research Gist
This study examined how a standardized Bacopa monnieri extract known as CDRI-08 affects memory at the genetic regulation level. Researchers looked at BDNF, a protein that supports the growth and maintenance of neurons, and reelin, which plays a role in neural organisation. The extract was found to increase BDNF expression by reducing methylation at the gene's promoter region. Methylation acts as a kind of switch that can silence gene activity, so reducing it allows more of the protein to be produced. The rats treated with the extract showed corresponding memory improvements.
Key Learnings
- Standardized Bacopa extract increased BDNF expression in the study animals.
- The mechanism involved reduced methylation at the BDNF promoter region.
- Reelin, another protein involved in neural organisation, was also affected.
- Memory performance improved alongside the molecular changes.
- This is a rat study — the epigenetic mechanism has not been confirmed in humans.
